Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake however, significant damage is unlikely. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 47 km (29 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout southern Central Java, southeastern West Java, southwestern East Java, and the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
The epicenter was about 160 km (99 miles) south-southwest of Srandakan. A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean south of Java Island at around 19:05 March 17.
